Meeting point:  Abraham’s Well

בהליכה היסטורית נעסוק בתולדות באר שבע העות׳מנית - מנדטורית. נצא מרחבת באר אברהם במעלה רחוב קק"ל, הלא הוא רחוב עשרים המטרים, נעסוק בתכנון העיר והקמתה מחדש, נכיר את המבנים העות'מאניים והבריטיים, נשמע על הדמויות היהודיות והערביות שחיו ופעלו בעיר במחצית הראשונה של המאה ה-20. 

We shall take a brief walk into history and look at the early days of modern Beer Sheva, under the Ottomans and the British Mandate. Starting at Abraham’s Well, on the banks of Wadi Beer Sheva, we’ll walk up Keren Kayemet (the “20 Meter Street”) and talk about the reasons for the city’s re-establishment; its plan and its architecture; its vision as a great, modernising project, and the Arabs and Jews who lived there in the first half of the 20th Century. We’ll finish at the new administrative centre, by the Seraya and the Mosque, symbols of the Ottoman’s refound power in the Negev.

Walking Tour, expected time 1:30 to 2 hours. Please bring hats, water and comfortable walking shoes

יונתן אנסון | סוציולוג, גמלאי המחלקה לעבודה סוציאלית באוניברסיטת בן-גוריון בנגב. מורה דרך, תושב הנגב מאז 1971. פעיל בעמותת שותפות-שראקה ב״ש לדו-קיום יהודי-ערבי בנגב.

Yonathan(Jon) Anson is a retired professor of sociology from the Ben-Gurion University (Social Work Department) and an accredited tour guide. He has lived in the Negev since 1971 and is today active in Shutafut-Sharaqa Beer Sheva, an NGO working for Jewish-Arab coexistence in the Negev.
